In 1976 Congress imposed opposing goals for Conrail to be profitable but get its freight off the Northeast Corridor.Integrating Penn Central{s existing freight electric operations into its overall operating plan proved difficult as Amtrak attempted to restore high speed passenger service and rebuild the NEC.Photographer Ralph Curcio was out on the NEC in eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey creating a fabulous chronological record that tells the story of how Conrail finally removed its through freight traffic and ceased electric freight operation altogether.

As the merger scene in the eastern United States heated up in the early 1960s with Erie Lackawanna, N&W-NKP-Wabash, and talk of Penn Central, a union of a different type occurred between the Chesapeake and Ohio and the Baltimore and Ohio. While not yet a true merger for several reasons, the affiliation was dubbed C&O/B&O and quite visible trackside during the 1960s on timetables, advertisements, corporate reports, and especially trackside where C&O and B&O locomotives began mixing it up, especially on the B&O.

Volume 3 wraps up the Amtrak Power series by covering the electric fleet, from the historic GG-1s to the little known Amtrak E44s, and many others between such as the AEM-7s, and the HHP8s. Paul Geiger was a Penn Central block operator who was so fond of his avocation that he searched out and photographed PRR, PC, and Conrail trains operating past all the former PRR towers from the Pittsburgh area to New York City. Follow his efforts inside and outside of these towers in this all-color presentation.
