The concluding volume of the Penn Central Power series covers the road's huge GP38 fleet as well as switchers.A long chapter on "odds & ends" winds up the book with some unexpected comings-and-goings.

In 1976 Congress imposed opposing goals for Conrail to be profitable but get its freight off the Northeast Corridor.Integrating Penn Central{s existing freight electric operations into its overall operating plan proved difficult as Amtrak attempted to restore high speed passenger service and rebuild the NEC.Photographer Ralph Curcio was out on the NEC in eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey creating a fabulous chronological record that tells the story of how Conrail finally removed its through freight traffic and ceased electric freight operation altogether.

As the merger scene in the eastern United States heated up in the early 1960s with Erie Lackawanna, N&W-NKP-Wabash, and talk of Penn Central, a union of a different type occurred between the Chesapeake and Ohio and the Baltimore and Ohio. While not yet a true merger for several reasons, the affiliation was dubbed C&O/B&O and quite visible trackside during the 1960s on timetables, advertisements, corporate reports, and especially trackside where C&O and B&O locomotives began mixing it up, especially on the B&O.

Volume 3 wraps up the Amtrak Power series by covering the electric fleet, from the historic GG-1s to the little known Amtrak E44s, and many others between such as the AEM-7s, and the HHP8s. Coverage includes RDCs and SPV-2000s, Turbos, Acela trains and Metroliners. The book concludes with Cabbage Cars, Demonstrators and Trial units and miscellaneous equipment.

Starting with locomotive #1, Volume 1 takes us to #2999, covering switchers, first-generation roadswitcher built by Alco, Baldwin, and EMD. Second-generation coverage includes GP35s, GP38s and more. Coverage concludes with BN-only rebuild models such as GP28M, GP28P and others.

Paul Geiger was a Penn Central block operator who was so fond of his avocation that he searched out and photographed PRR, PC, and Conrail trains operating past all the former PRR towers from the Pittsburgh area to New York City. Follow his efforts inside and outside of these towers in this all-color presentation.

After a short look at steam, a model-by-model tour of the road's diesel fleet begins with LWT #1. Continuing numerically through the freight cab units, U-boats and suburban diesels, Volume 1 ends with #563 an SW900m.

Volume 2 covers the covered wagons built by EMD and FM as well as the second-generation roadswitchers that ushered in the 1960s. The Fairbanks-Morse C-Liners are featured as well as EMD's F3s, -7s, -9s and FP7s. Roadswitchers include the Milwaukee-only SDL39 as well as a plethora of EMD GP and SD models. The GE products feature the U-boats-both the four and six-wheel variety.

The post-merger operations of ACL and SAL are examined including the abandonment of duplicate mileage under the new SCL flag in West Florida.
